West Runton Roman Camp
We went to visit the Roman Camp at the back of West Runton. Owned by the National Trust it is the highest point in Norfolk at 328 feet above sea level. This is probably why it was chosen by the Romans as a signalling station relaying messages along the coast between their camps at Caister on Sea and Brancaster. “Caister” “Caster” or “Chester” all come from the Latin word “Castra” meaning camp or fort. From the camp there are amazing views over the coast.
We were going to try and work out why they put the camp there and tol see how easy or difficult it was to defend.
We divided into two groups with our own camps and flags. We had to attack the other group's camp and capture their flag. Caitlin took all the photos. Kylisa tried to look cool. Jason and Dom made complete idiots of themselves as usual. Everyone else had fun.
This is an old photo of the view from the camp when there were fewer trees about. it was taken in the 1930s and we found it on the internet.
